The Build Book: Preview

The book is finally here! So we want to let you know what's contained within the 130 pages of work we've done!

Foreword

Before we get into it, we want to briefly discuss the way that we approached writing this book, starting with what we don’t cover. Obviously, we really hope that we answer all of your outstanding questions in here! But we’d be lying to ourselves if we thought that we’d satisfy each and every reader.

We don’t outline exactly what we built and how we built it, in step-by-step instruction, like an Ikea instruction manual. We don’t have the “blueprints” to our van in this book. The truth is that those never even existed. Even if they did, we would have revised them countless times over the course of our build. Our construction was incredibly fluid and at times, improvised. A lot of details were left out of any plans that we had.

This book is meant to be a soft guide to all of the things that you’ll want to think about as you’re building out your own van, to act as inspiration for your project. In each chapter, we go through the options that you may have for specific features, then review what we did and roughly how we did it. When appropriate, we include any sketches or mockups that we did for the build to aid you in your own. But again, there really aren’t many!

It’s also worth mentioning that, just because we wrote it, doesn’t mean it’s the “right” way of doing it. When it comes to designing and building your own space, there are many different ways you can go about it. We’re just here to try and help you through a similar process to ours.

Ultimately we want this book to be a living document. As you read it, take note of what you like and dislike! We want your opinions too, and we hope to revise this edition as we continue to learn. We’re always looking for feedback and ideas to add to the community knowledge base. So make sure to let us know what you think when you’re done! We wouldn’t be making this book if it weren’t for you.

Happy building!
